With Christmas just around the corner, it’s the perfect opportunity to stroll through city streets and enjoy the festive decorations. For years retailers have been transforming their store windows into works of art, blending colours, lights, and imaginative displays to captivate the eyes of potential customers. Before we reveal what our perfect Christmas window display would look like, we have compiled the best examples of stores that have truly maximised their windows this holiday season.

Featuring retailers from all over the world, each store offers a unique concept with the same goal:  becoming a must-visit destination for shoppers this Christmas.

1. New York

Bloomingdales: A Wicked Christmas

Is there a better time to visit the land of Oz than at Christmas? Green and pink hues have taken over the windows of Bloomingdales, representing the duality of the two witches from the musical Wicked. The department store has capitalised on the movie’s viral success to attract even more visitors this Holiday season.

The fairytale-inspired décor, paired with looks drawn from the film, makes the 59th Street storefront a must-see this Christmas in New York. Let’s follow the yellow brick road!

Macy’s: Give Love

How would you portray love and Christmas in your store window display? Without a doubt it’s by making red the star of the show. Macy’s luminous windows feature a blend of neon and LED lights, complete with elves, Christmas trees, and even Santa Claus himself.

The movement of these elements brings the display to life, capturing the attention of everyone that passes by in Herald Square.

2. Londres

Fortnum & Mason: Christmas Nature

Who says animals don’t celebrate Christmas? The seven windows at the Piccadilly store are adorned with vibrant flora and fauna, while showcasing the British retailer’s products. A majestic deer with golden antlers stands in the centre, decorated with Christmas ornaments, while a nest of paper birds perches nearby.

Each window tells a unique story using a different prinicpal colour for every scene, ensuring that passersby stop to admire both the store window design and the displayed products.

Harvey Nichols: A Nightmarish Christmas

Adaptability is key in the retail world, and Harvey Nichols’ Christmas window display is the perfect example. Capitalising on The World of Tim Burton exhibition, the store teamed up with the Design Museum to create a fantastical window inspired by the filmmaker’s signature style.

Twisted, spooky trees draped in Christmas decorations frame mannequins in dark, moody attire, while characters from Burton’s illustrations can be spotted iamongst the store windows. It’s terrifyingly festive and fun!

3. Europa

Galeries Lafayette: A Sustainable Christmas

Swiss designer Kevin Germanier has infused every corner of the windows with sustainable elements while maintaing the stores signature elegance The backdrop features bright, vivid colours, while Christmas characters dressed in recycled materials add a festive touch. Tres chic!

El Corte Inglés: The City of Time

With the tradition of Christmas windows as a hallmark of the brand, the Spanish retailer has become a staple in the Christmas calendar in Madrid. Better known as  “Cortylandia”, El Corte Inglés attracts hundreds of families every year to the store. Each season, the façade on Preciados Street showcases a new Christmas story and these years the starring characters are animatronic.

There’s even a light show. This year, meet “Clock”, the cuckoo clock that sings melodies along with his friends—a cast of squirrels, rabbits, ducks, and other animals- during the Holiday season.
